Treating Without Pain by Alison Taylor
This course is designed to explore current treatment concepts for the hand and upper extremity, including kinesiotaping, Mobilization with Motion (MWM), cupping, and IASTM.
This course will explore different treatment options for common hand-elbow diagnoses. It will teach you how to treat without pain and assess the patient from the perspective of the 4 S—skin, Scar, Sensation, and Swelling.
Discussion and demonstration of how fascia, muscle imbalance, and joint alignment can contribute to pain and ROM will be integrated throughout the course. Outside-the-box thinking, including joint positioning and alignment, Kinesio taping, and skin and fascial mobilization, will all be demonstrated.
Lab time will also be available, allowing participants to gain hands-on knowledge of how these techniques can assist with UE rehab.
Learning objectives
- Assess the 4 S’s (Skin, Scar, Sensation, and Swelling) and how they contribute to pain in the upper extremity.
- Complete at least one provocative test for muscle imbalance and alignment that may contribute to pain in the UE.
- Demonstrate manual and soft tissue techniques to improve patient outcomes, such as completion of ADL, IADL or work occupations.
- Summarize the philosophy of and basic concepts of Taping and MWM
- Demonstrate basic joint positioning and corrections to reduce pain in common upper extremity diagnoses.
- Pick up some “ PEARLS” for treating without pain

Day 1 of the combined concepts course will give you new techniques that can be used immediately with multiple “ take home” tips and pearls. It will include significant demonstration, lab and video evidence to present the concept of “Treating without Pain”. This will include looking closer at the 4 S’s- Skin, Swelling, Scar, and Sensation as well as joint alignment and balance. We will explore techniques to improve joint ROM, eliminate pain, and eliminate compensation patterns for faster outcomes. Current research will be included to support these concepts.
DAY 2 of the combined concepts course will give you new techniques that can be used to treat TENDONITIS in the upper extremity. It will include significant demonstrations and lab and video evidence to present the concept of muscle imbalance and alignment. This will include looking closer at the agonist /antagonist muscle relationship, joint kinematics with movement as well as compensation movement patterns.
In other words, …what muscles are “underfunctioning “and what are “over-functioning” . This "Thinking outside the box" class has lots of lab and manual time. It's the most functional class you will ever take. Course outline may be modified at times per class focus. Wear lab clothes for upper extremity, and please bring scissors.
